Phone Numbers
Provision and manage phone numbers for SMS and AI voice calls — including local, toll-free, and international numbers.
Your voice and SMS numbers
The Phone Numbers page (at Settings > Phone Numbers) is where you manage the phone numbers connected to your Autoch.at workspace. These numbers are used for:
- Inbound SMS — Customers text this number and the message appears in your Conversations inbox.
- Outbound SMS — Messages you send to customers come from this number.
- AI voice calls — Your AI voice assistant answers calls made to this number.
- Outbound voice — Calls your AI initiates go out from this number.
Provisioning a new number
- Go to Settings > Phone Numbers.
- Click Get a Number.
- Choose the number type:
- Local — A number with a local area code. Best for businesses that want to appear local to their customers.
- Toll-free — An 800/888/etc. number. Good for national businesses or customer service lines.
- Search by area code, region, or country.
- Select a number from the results.
- Confirm the monthly cost and click Provision.
The number is immediately active and ready to use.
Phone number pricing varies by country, number type, and usage (per message and per minute). Check the pricing page or contact support for current rates before provisioning numbers in multiple countries.
Assigning a number to a channel
Once provisioned, you need to assign the number to a channel:
- For SMS — Go to Settings > SMS and select the number as your inbound/outbound SMS number.
- For Voice — Go to your AI assistant's settings and assign the number as the voice channel number.
A single number can be used for both SMS and voice simultaneously.
Managing existing numbers
From the Phone Numbers page, you can:
- View usage — See how many messages and minutes have been used for each number in the current billing period.
- Rename — Give a number a friendly label so you can identify it easily (e.g., "US Support Line" or "Sales - Toronto").
- Release — Return a number you no longer need. Released numbers are immediately removed from your account and you stop being charged for them.
Releasing a number is permanent. Once released, the number may be assigned to another customer and you won't be able to get it back. Make sure you've updated any places where customers have this number saved before releasing it.
